Let me start with the quality of the print. I really like this book, its not too large so its easy to carry around, its not heavy. I also like the fonts used and its size makes reading a pleasure. The book itself is very well written. It does not require you to be a coder and its easy to follow. Everything is explained at its own pace and it does not leave room for assumptions.
Surprisingly even thought its a small it covers a wealth of subjects and even highly specialized ones like Morphic and Seaside. It explains pretty much the entire foundation of pharo, smalltalk, the IDE and its corresponding tools and even some pharo habits.
The one thing I did not like is that it introduces the viewer to the Enviroment without first giving a solid introduction to the language itself. I think it would be easier if it was the other way around but I dont think people will have a hard time choosing their own path and which chapter to read first. Jumping between chapters is not hard because the book itself does not make assumptions of what you already know and its written in a way that is can be read like this.
I would not call this a "reference" book , obviously it can be used like that but it still misses a lot of things that now are added to Pharo By Example 2. Pharo after all is by no means a small software so there is tons of things needed to be documented. By the time Pharo By Example 2 is ready we will have a more "complete" reference and I will back purchasing the new book ;)
Overall I would rate this as a 8/10 , it does explain pretty much everything you need to get you making complete software with pharo but there is still a lot of stuff included in Pharo that this book does not explain. I cant recommend it enough because its an excellent way to learn pharo and the price is right and because of its size its easy to carry around compared to big , heavy Java/C/C# books that are meant to be read on a table or desk, Pharo by Example can be read anywhere and it could even rival reading the pdf version with your tablet or Kindle.
Definetly a worthy purchase.

Pharo by Example Oscar Nierstrasz Stéphane Ducasse Damien Pollet 9783952334140 Books Reviews
If you're using Pharo (an open source effort to create a clean, beautiful Smalltalk to use and learn from), and want a comprehensive reference, this is it. There are many online resources, but the information is scattered and often out-of-date. Not only does this book give you everything you need to know to dive into Pharo, but it takes you through an example application to get a feel for how truly revolutionary it is to code in Smalltalk. Finally, in case you didn't know, Stéphane Ducasse is the ringleader of the Pharo project, and there is no one better to guide you!
Excellent book. Pharo is such a nice Smalltalk dialect, a real pleasure when coupled with Seaside for web development.
This is an excellent introduction to Smalltalk using the Pharo [...] virtual machine. Smalltalk can be a little daunting, because the syntax is a little unusual, and even more because in general you don't create plain text source files, but instead add code to a running Smalltalk image using the built in tools.
My one frustration is that the supplementary materials don't run well on a Mac for reasons that are still obscure, and the email address on the supporting site [...] is to a mailing list that is not available until you've subscribed. So getting a bug or support request through is difficult -- albeit certainly not impossible.
