I really, really liked this book. I know it will not be to everyone's taste, but if you are already a Amy Cross fan, then I think you will like this one.The story is told by the main character, Owen, who purchases the estate in the present day and confidently moves in despite nearly everyone trying to warn him about the terrible history of the place. He does not listen to them and he moves in to get away from a life surrounded by people and to work on his writing. Then things begin to happen that over time he cannot explain and ignore. But I won't spoil the book.
The story of the bride is told in first person by the bride herself. You discover very quickly that she is not a likable person AT ALL, yet having her tell her own story I could not help but admire her strength and convictions and at one point, where she speaks to her fiance to keep him in lock-step, I laughed at how she "persuaded" him to keep their wedding plans. Oh, my! Katinka is a memorable character, to be sure! I even felt sorry for her a couple of times.
The book is sadly filled with editing errors such as missing and incorrect words. Those did annoy me, but I have to admit that I enjoyed the story so much that I didn't give up on the book. I am so glad I read it and I am still a Amy Cross fan.
A couple of things that Ms. Cross has in the book don't make too much sense, if you think about them enough, but I am glad she added them because I think they added to the atmosphere beautifully.
Minor spoilers - the spiders are a cool touch, and gave me probably one of the oddest sentences I have ever read. "I've never heard of self-crushing spiders before." I loved that one!
The obsession for beauty for Katinka goes further than is really explained save for her idea of utter perfection. Perhaps, tho, that is enough to explain her odd ideas of achieving that perfection. I can't help but wish that her methods had some sort of back story to explain them.
The death of the bride is somewhat ridiculous, but it fits in well in explaining why the ghost of the bride looks the way she does. Just don't overthink this part and you will likely see the dark humour that I found in her death scene.
WARNING - there is the murder of a child in this book towards the end. You can skip or skim over this part and not miss anything story-wise.
I have just finished the book and really enjoyed it. For Amy Cross fans, I am pretty sure you will like this one. For people new to her, I think they will like it at least enough to keep reading Ms. Cross' work.

It was okay. Just okay. The most distracting thing about the book are the grammatical errors, the ridiculous spiders, the fact Owen needs a wake up call, and the overuse of the word 'hiss." (Not as in reptiles.Think "she hissed, he hissed, they hissed. etc." Why Cross would make Owen so um...dumb is beyond me. There were some scary parts, some suspenseful parts, and some parts of the story that aggravated me. Having said that, I ordered a couple more Cross books because I'm hoping this one was just a poorly edited story.
I thought Katrinka was the only interesting character. She was drawn out and oddly complex. Owen? Well, he was pretty flat and uninteresting and kind of thick-headed. Spoilers Ahead Someone kills my dog in my house, I don't care if I think it's a real person or a ghost, I'm not going to hang around to finish my book. He was almost brain-damaged at times. How many weird things need to happen before someone gets smart enough to leave? Anyway, I continued reading despite the middle section dragging out too long. I gave it three stars (maybe 3.5) for the sheer craziness of the bride. She could almost be called sympathetic at some points, yet you could also hate her at the same time. Good characterization. I think this would have been a better short story or novella.
So I decided to give this author one more chance. Thus said, I will not be reading any more books by this author. The writing in her books is atrocious. The book is riddled with grammatical errors to the point that it is irritating to read. It basically sounds like a 5th grader wrote it. But I started it so I felt compelled to finish the book. I am no author by any means and I couldn't even begin to write a book but come on...... This is the 3rd book I have read by this author and each one has multiple, multiple errors in it. If you are going to write a book PLEASE have it edited properly or at least have someone proof read it.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. It was a quick read and kept me engrossed. I enjoyed the ghost's back story, Charlie's story, and Vanessa's appearance. There was a twisty little ending that topped it all off for me. A quirky, quick ghost story that I recommend you read.
At this point I honestly can’t tell the difference between any of the 15+ books by Amy Cross that I’ve read. The typos, the fill in the blank plot lines, the many instances of characters hearing many, many “bumping” noises, the guarantee of at least one leg injury, the pages and pages of repeated phrases to add length....etc.
Any attempt at writing and putting yourself out there is admirable to me but to take so little pride that you can’t even have a friend proofread your stories is shameful. To so obviously pad your stories for length without ever using that space to add some character depth but rather just repeat the same phrases and thoughts over and over and over is shameful. Obviously Amy is of the belief that quantity is better than quality because there is no quality to be found. I’ve read so many hoping for any redeeming qualities and just find myself faced with reading basically the same story repeatedly.
Honestly with any ghost story you’ll get some cliches at this point because there’s not much originality left in the genre but that’s no excuse for such shoddy editing. You can still tell a compelling story if you have any pride in your work or any respect for your fans. I see neither in Amy’s work.
I chose this book because I thought the synopsis and title were intriguing. This book captivated my attention in the beginning, but then seemed to drag. However, I did finish it. I have read better, but I have also read far worse stories. Take note however there us profanity in this book, graphic death scenes, etc., so use your own discretion; this is not something I would want my fourteen-year-old reading. I also have complaints about some of the grammatical errors which got distracting.
