1949. A bloody war engulfs the Balkans’ nations of Montrovia and Corabia. Walter Krang, a brutal Montrovian concentration camp guard, escapes certain death as a war criminal when an inmate forgives him and helps him escape the camp’s liberation. Masquerading as a camp survivor and accompanied by a 17 year old Corabian girl, Krang makes his way across the war torn region seeking revenge on the woman who freed him. Krang traverses a landscape of war and reconstruction, burying the dead for his meals as he flees justice and chases his demons. Caught between the solitude of burying the dead and the savagery of war, Krang must confront his own actions and what it means to be forgiven. Will justice be served?

I read about 80 books a year, and this is one of my top books of 2014. It is so deeply imagined and its ideas are so interesting that it pulled me in right away and wouldn't let me go.The story of a brutal concentration camp guard and a brutalized girl seeking forgiveness and family is compelling. In a sense, it is a road story as they drift across a war-torn landscape. But all the while, the man is struggling with what he did in the war and, almost unconsciously at first, seeking atonement. The girl did things in the war too, living on the streets in order to survive, and she too feels the need for forgiveness and to find her parents, who ended up in the concentration camp.
The man and the girl are extreme examples of an everyday human dilemma, and thus their plight speaks to any reader. There are plot twists I didn't see coming, so on the level of just being a page-turner it succeeds as well. I loved the strong scenic quality - not only is the action dramatized but the setting always feels real. A very satisfying reading experience.

Even though this book has a lot of action at the beginning, it didn't really grip me until about half way through. Overall it was a good read and I enjoyed it.
