Darcy Rhone has a rough life. She's with a guy who doesn't adore and worship her like the ex-fiance that she cheated on. He's also not as "presentable" as her former fiance, Dex, and she's pregnant as a result of the illicit affair. Boo hoo. Furthermore, Darcy refuses to have anything to do with her best and childhood friend, Rachel, who fell in love with said ex-fiance.I must admit that I never really had any desire to read Emily Giffin's books until I saw the "Something Borrowed" movie and loved it. I enjoyed the characters in the movie so much that I wanted to see what happened next. Thankfully, I discovered that Giffin had written a sequel. The first few chapters of SOMETHING BLUE covered the end of the movie (and probably the related book), so it served as a rehash, lest the reader forget what happened.
Unlike SOMETHING BORROWED which was told from sweet Rachel's point of view, SOMETHING BLUE was told from Darcy's point of view. At first, I found it difficult to read a book from the point of view of a very unsympathetic character. Darcy is not likable and hasn't matured/grown any since the events of SOMETHING BORROWED. Her personality is like nails on a chalkboard. She thinks world revolves around her. In fact, she's upset that neither Rachel or Dex call to wish her a happy birthday after she told them she never wanted anything to do with either one of them again. She also feels like she's one of the "chosen." In one passage, Darcy ponders, "I suddenly wondered what color eyes my baby would have. I hoped for blue, or at least green like mine. Everyone knows blue eyes are prettier, at least on a girl, which is why there are so many songs about brown-eyed girls, to make them feel better."
While I was pleased with the novel overall by the finale (I won't give anything more away), I was disappointed that neither Rachel nor Dex -- prominently featured in SOMETHING BORROWED -- barely made appearances in SOMETHING BLUE. However, I appreciate that Giffin took a chance and wrote the novel from a different perspective than the original. Kudos to her for that and for dispelling my belief that her novels were cheesy chick lit. The characters are well-defined and not stereotypical. By the end of SOMETHING BLUE, my eyes were watering.

In Something Blue, Giffin continues the story of Something Borrowed but from Darcy Rhone's perspective this time. It's an interesting twist because we now get to see the world through the eyes of Darcy whose downfall we were essentially rooting for before in Something Borrowed. She's pregnant and alone having alienated all of her close friend throughout the years. She needs to combat her selfishness to care for her new child all while learning to love herself first. Something Blue is definitely an entertaining read and one that almost betrays you because you grow to love a character that were indifferent about before. Something Borrowed is a personal favorite of mine and I just wished that Rachel and Dex were more present in this novel. Nonetheless, I would recommend this book to a friend and even give to them as a pair. The two books read together well as I figured was intended. Giffin delivers a sound story and further elaborates on a character we only knew on the surface in Something Borrowed. Good read.
At first, I was so disappointed to learn that Something Blue was not about Rachel. By the end of Something Borrowed, who didn't love Rachel??? I didn't care about Darcy. I didn't much care for Darcy halfway through Something Blue, as a matter of fact.
This book was predictable in that you can really see where the story is going fairly early on. What's wholly unexpected is that I would be a believer. I didn't think it was possible to see Darcy as a sympathetic heroine. But then slowly, I started to care. And then care more. And then by the end, I had as much love for Darcy as I did Rachel and felt the story was complete.
The message in this story, to me, was We can never overcome past disappointments if we aren't accountable for the role we played in them. After all, only crazy people keep doing the same thing, over and over, expecting a different result in the end, right?
Great message hidden in a great story.
ok to be honest I bought this book because I really liked the movie, and heard they were making another with Darcy's story, and I loved her character so this book really intrigued me, was really happy with this book, I read it in two days very very good.
I finally got hooked--during the last third or so of the book. I hate to start a book and not finish it, but this one was trite, repetetive and self-indulgent (which I recognize was the character's persona) but the author's voice was whiney as well. When it did come together it was a little too neatly without adding conflict for the plot. The writing was sound, just seemed a little like it was written by a formula.
I liked this book much better than Something Borrowed. Ethan was one of my favorite characters from Something Borrowed; I had really hoped that Rachel would end up with Ethan instead of Dex. Fortunately, Ethan is back in Something Blue and plays a much bigger role.
The love story here has a lot more innocence to it. Confession I actually cried reading it, it was so touching.
If you liked Something Borrowed, you will love this! If you didn't love Something Borrowed because of all the cheating, this is like Something Borrowed, but without all the cheating...
